Mmmm...Has a serious Zelda vibe to it and the chords you're using are beautiful. I would love to hear this turned into a longer piece. BTW, which chords and scales are you using?

GoToMyNewAccount responds:

I don't know a lot about chords and scales to be honest. Still learning that one. I just play/write what I feel.

This is beautiful. Your voice is stunning and sincere and the melodies and instrumentation are perfect. Good luck AND DON'T FUCK IT UP.

etherealwinds responds:

thank you mcgorilla, shantay you stay xx

I had to listen to your piece after your comment. This is excellent, and that isn't just a polite reciprocation in respond to your kind words on my song -- I mean it. You've somehow managed to blend rock, game music and jazzy fusion into one style and it works. What really caught my ear most of all was your interesting use of rhythm throughout the piece and the odd time signature in the verse. Are you a drummer by any chance? I really enjoy that element of your music. The vocals are also cool. I enjoy that drawl that you have...almost reminds me of Julian Casablancas' style. The composition is super solid overall and it's an interesting song (in a good way) and the chorus holds it together -- what I mean by that, is that if you had all the odd time signatures throughout the whole song, it might get a bit much, but the 4/4 feel in the chorus adds a refrain from that and makes the whole thing sit nicely together. I'm being so inarticulate, good grief.

In terms of criticisms, I'd say that the instruments are mixed pretty well overall, but the vocal processing doesn't quite match up with the mix of the rest of the piece. I think with a tiny EQ tweaks (I think the low mids are a bit too present and it sounds a little muffled. Were you singing super close to the mic?) and some delay or reverb, it'd sit nicely and make the whole piece sound brighter. :D

I hope you make it through to the next round of NGADM so I can hear more from you! Keep well and keep making good music! :)

=> blend rock, game music, and jazzy fusion =>

Haha, that's a great way of describing it! I've been having a hard time nailing exactly what this track is, but that's a pretty good description. :P

=> drummer =>

Yes I am! And I'm so happy you could tell—I've really been trying to step up the drums I use (because unlike mixing and production stuff, drums are something I'm confident that I can do well if I try hard enough :D!)

=> Julian Casablancas =>

Oh gosh, that's a huge compliment. I'm nowhere near, but thanks so much for pointing that out!!

=> chorus holds it together =>

Huh, I never thought about it that way! I think I see your point—it's good to have the anchor of a song be more familiar. I honestly totally didn't do that with that intention in mind; it's just hard to write in weird time sigs XD

=> vocal processing =>

Er, not sure when you posted this comment in relation to some of the edits I've made, but I've definitely processed the vocals more since first submitting it at the initial deadline! I've done some compression, reverb, and delay, so hopefully they sound a *biiiit* more like studio vocals now.

(tbh I'm preeeetty sure this comment was posted before I made those changes because I think I used your suggestions to actually make them!)

=> super close to the mic =>

Lol how did you know XD I've never sung with a mic like this before (or, y'know, sung before on a track), so I'm still getting used to its functionality. I plan to use it more in the future though!

Thanks for the awesome review, McGorilla42! I wish all the same to you :D

Wow, this is really damn good. Your voice is great and the melodies are very interesting. The way you've blended a bossa with an epic rock track is unique and impressive. And to think you did all of this in only two weeks...wow.

I'm sure you're going to kick butt once again in NGADM and I look forward to hearing everything you do!

bassfiddlejones responds:

Thank you sir gorilla, we worked hard!

God damn it, Connor, this is SO good. I love it! The way you layer sounds and have things popping in and out just for an instant is excellent and that blues solo was fantastic. You keep things interesting rhythmically throughout the song, but it has a consistent drive. Fantastic.

PS. Teach me, senpai.

ConnorGrail responds:

Glad to see you pop back in again, thanks for enjoying the tune.

Hey! This piece is really great. It's very interesting and atmospheric and your melodies are great. I've listened to some of your music before and have always enjoyed the way you tell stories and use instruments as characters.

I'm actually your competitor for this round of NGADM, so I had to see what you had done. Our pieces are COMPLETELY different, so seeing the results will be really interesting. I can't wait.

I wish you all the best! :) I'll upload mine a little later if you'd like to hear.

PomicStone responds:

Thank you very much! It really pleases me, that you appreciate my instrumental storytelling!
I'll go listen your submission for this round, it really is difficult to comparate two different genres.
It's very nice to see this friendly-competitive setting for this competition.
I wish you good luck!

I'm not totally sure but I think there's a small chance that this is a troll.

(I still listened to the whole thing) I have no idea how to rate this. I want to give it 5 stars cos apt use of old meme but 0 cos literally no effort, so 2.5 seems appropriate.

Killer as always, Jamie! I really dig the chorus and you HAVE to teach me how to do that cool stuttering effect at 2:25. Sweet solos, great riffs and pinch harmonics that aren't totally cheesy - 5*

TSRBand responds:

Thanks for listening! Glad you like how this one came out :D

Strangest coincidence - I JUST listened to your song, then watched Dota Watafak and your song was played at the end of the video.

I must say that this sort of pop isn't my cup of tea at all, but hot damn I can absolutely appreciate this for what it is. The mix, arrangement, melody and everything in between has been executed with perfection.

This is top-quality stuff! Amazing work.

Interesting track! Very atmospheric and dark. That bass at the start and throughout the piece seems a little off to me. It's almost in tune, but I think you've added some pitch-shift oscillator on it and it kinda warbles and makes it sound slightly out of tune (I tend to totally avoid any kind of pitch-shifting automation on bass as it's so foundational to a piece). Really enjoy the build around 2:15 and the section that comes after it. Think the drums might be a tiny bit loud, but this type of music is drum-driven, so that might just be my personal taste :) Maybe that bass is also part of a style I'm unfamiliar with? Either way, interesting piece!

Aterum responds:

Thank you! Witch house the genre is kind of characterized by its Lo-Fi sounds rich atmosphere and sometimes borderline dissonant nature, I definitely took inspiration for that element from the last minute of Mercenary by Crystal Castles. I did not however check how loud my layered drums in the second half of the track definitely something I'll try not to forget to do in the future. I appreciate the review!

I make music. Some is electronic and some has guitars and pianos in it. I'm mainly focusing on game music at the moment.
Hope you enjoy what you find here!
